COPENHAGEN — Denmark has issued new travel guidance urging transgender individuals to consult the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen before planning trips to America, citing potential complications with entry requirements under current U.S. policies.
The advisory follows a similar warning from Finland last week, both prompted by concerns over how gender markers on travel documents may be processed at U.S. borders under existing regulations.
While not directly referencing any specific policy changes, Denmark's foreign ministry highlighted that the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) form only provides binary gender options—male or female—which could create discrepancies for travelers with non-binary or updated gender markers.
"Travelers whose passports display an X gender designation or who have undergone legal gender changes are advised to seek guidance from U.S. authorities well in advance of their trip," states the updated Danish travel advisory page.
Denmark permits citizens to select X as their passport gender marker when applicants identify outside traditional male/female categories or are intersex—a progressive policy now potentially clashing with some nations' entry requirements.
How Embassies Are Responding
The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen confirmed that visa applications featuring an X marker would receive documentation reflecting the applicant's sex assigned at birth rather than their current gender identity.
A Growing Trend Among European Nations
"
Finland: Updated its advisory March 14 warning about possible entry denials when passport genders differ from birth records
"
Germany: Recently strengthened its US travel notices after multiple border detentions of German citizens
"
The Netherlands: Reportedly considering similar advisories according to diplomatic sources
"We haven't received reports of Danish citizens being denied entry," clarified a foreign ministry spokesperson, "but we believe proactive guidance helps travelers avoid stressful situations."
The situation reflects broader discussions about international mobility for LGBTQ+ individuals as nations implement varying approaches to gender recognition policies.
